Mario 2? Dream On.

N64 owners hoping for a 1999 release of a sequel to Super Mario 64 will be disappointed to learn that the project has been stymied and may not even arrive on the Nintendo 64 at all.
Although Nintendo had begun principal design work on Super Mario 64 2, which was to star both Mario and Luigi, the completion of Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time kept NCL's designers too busy to move ahead with the development.
"We have made the outline for Mario 2 more than one year ago, but I haven't touched it since then," Mario creator Shigeru Miyamoto told IGN64.com. "The original idea was to make it available on the 64DD, but since I haven't worked on it for the last year, I can't tell what it will be like."
Since Nintendo usually spends around two years on development of its major franchise titles, a 1999 release is completely out of the question. As a matter of fact, Miyamoto himself is not even sure whether the game will come out on N64 at all.
"Maybe we will get some other people to work on it," Miyamoto said. "Or we will make it for a completely different system."
Miyamoto is currently spending most of his time on the completion of the Mario Artist creativity apps for the upcoming 64DD launch in Japan. Which title he will work on after the Japan-only painting titles is still in the stars.
